JEHOVAH-SABAOTH-"The
Lord Of Hosts"
- Romans 9:29 cf. Isaiah 1:9; Zech. 1:3
"Sabaoth"= hosts, armies. He is not the Lord of 2 or
3-He is the Lord of HOSTS! It is found over 240 times in the
Bible.
The militant name for God. "Hosts," not a mob. Hosts
implies a group organized and under authority. "The LORD
of hosts" is a name that denotes God has a multitude of
ready and able servants await to carry out His command. This
name suggests that the Lord is the Commander and Chief of the
armies of heaven.
Zechariah was a prophet to the remnant coming back to Jerusalem
to rebuild the Temple that was destroyed by the Babylonians.
He used this name for God 53 times in his short book.
I. The BOY PROPHET of the name (Zech. 1:3; 2:4).
A. His FAMILY (1:1).
B. His FELLOW prophets (Ezra 5:1-2; 6:14).
C. His FIDELITY. Zechariah was consistent.
He persevered. Others were waning and slacking up after they arrived
back from captivity. Zechariah remained faithful to what God called him to.
II. The BOUNTIFUL PROVISIONS of the name. Examples of the
application of this name.
A. God's name when you CONFRONT YOUR ENEMY (1 Sam. 17:45).
B. God's name when you COME TO YOUR EXTREMITY (Psalm 46:3-11;
Haggai 2:4-9; James 5:4).
III. The BRIGHT PROMISE of the name.
A. It promises a SPIRIT to rebuild (Zech. 4:6). This name is used
in the context of rebuilding Jerusalem. What needs to be rebuilt
in your life?
B. It promises a SHEPHERD to redeem. (Zech. 13:1-2, 6-7).
C. It promises a SOVEREIGN to restore and rule over Israel in their
land. A RESTORING name (Zech. 14:16-21).
Conclusion: Martin Luther wrote these words over 400 years ago in our
Christian hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
LORD SABAOTH is His name, From age to age the same.
And He must win the battle.
